Onze projecten voeren we uit met onze lokale partners in het land in kwestie. De programma’s zelf zijn ontworpen op basis van de vragen en behoeften van de plaatselijke bevolking. Hierdoor is niet één programma gelijk aan het andere. Zo kunnen projecten, bedoeld om de overheid ter verantwoording te roepen, op dezelfde journalistieke principes berusten, maar toch sterk in uitvoering verschillen.
En al zijn onze Open Minds programma’s altijd bedoeld om jongeren rationeel en afgewogen te leren oordelen en schrijven, op het ene continent zitten ze op de universiteit – op het andere nog op de middelbare school.
Open Minds traint jongeren in kritisch denken, leert hen communiceren en geeft hen vaardigheden die ze de rest van hun leven kunnen gebruiken. Het bekendste bewijs hiervoor is Malala Yousafzai, de winnares van de Nobelprijs, die op twaalfjarige leeftijd in Pakistan het Open Minds programma volgde. Ook in Afghanistan en Nigeria hebben we een Open Minds project opgezet.

Midden Oosten/Noord-Afrika
In 2003 startte ons eerste grote programma in Irak, dat nog altijd voortduurt. Sindsdien hebben we onze projecten uitgebreid naar Libië, Tunesië en Syrië. Daarnaast trainen en begeleiden we journalisten en activisten bij kleinere projecten. Veel programma’s in deze landen zijn speciaal gemaakt voor en door vrouwen, zoals het vrouwenblog op ons digitale platform Damascus Bureau.

Op dit continent is IWPR actief in een aantal van de meest complexe omgevingen. Onze programma’s helpen de burgers bij het maken van weloverwogen beslissingen over zaken die hun dagelijks leven beïnvloeden. We informeren over onderwerpen als mensenrechten en de straffeloosheid van het leger - en geven een stem aan mensen die nooit eerder gehoord werden.

In zuidoost en oost-Azië, draaien IWPRs programma’s om goed bestuur, een verantwoordelijke overheid en de opbouw van een rechtsstaat. We helpen mensen zichzelf te transformeren van passieve toeschouwers tot actieve aanjagers van positieve verandering. In Afghanistan en Pakistan IWPR bouwt aan media capaciteit, traint verslaggevers en redacteuren, en geeft maatschappelijke organisaties de tools die nodig zijn om het contact en de communicatie met het publiek en ambtenaren te verbeteren.

IWPR is in de Kaukasus en Centraal-Azië sinds twaalf jaar actief, op de Westelijke Balkan zelfs al twintig jaar. Hier geven we een stem aan de gemeenschap door de capaciteit van activisten en maatschappelijke organisaties te verbeteren, omwille van een effectievere voorlichting en betrokkenheid bij belangrijke regionale kwesties. Ons werk vindt plaats in landen in transitie en is toegespitst op het verbeteren van de mensenrechten, op vrede en verzoening, en op internationale gerechtigheid.

In Cuba ondersteunt IWPR sinds 2011 jonge, ambitieuze journalisten en civil society organisaties. We leren hen effectief te communiceren en brengen hen de vaardigheden bij die ze nodig hebben om succesvol te strijden voor positieve sociale veranderingen. Ook bouwen we aan een platform waarop jonge journalisten en activisten uit heel Latijns Amerika hun informatie en analyses kunnen delen.
